Make me understand why life is bitter
Why pain is a brother and trouble the sister

Make me understand why I toil for wealth
Only to see it devoured by the evil

Make me understand why am short of tears
Make me understand why in pain
I thank God am not like the rest
Who are badly off

Make me understand why I work so hard
In the scorching fire and rising tide
To amount to nothing

Make me understand why the lazy have their way
Make me understand why the lousy
Have unlimited opportunities
While I long for just one
